Try reading this first:

http://www.gammon.com.au/smaug/howtocompile.htm

There are various people here who know stuff about coding - they will probably respond to a more specific question, like, "how do I do X"?

However it has been said before, and I'll say it again, if you are a newbie coder - that is no crime in itself, we all had to start somewhere - but changing a MUD server if you don't know much about C programming is asking for a lot of frustration. Try a simpler project first. If you want to jump into the deep end, download the latest source, and start browsing it to see how it works, for example, what happens when you type "look".
