I think the topic says enough. I'd like to get a game started that would be like a cross of PLanescpae: Torment and Prince of Persia. If you don't know the first, its pretty much the RPG of all time, and with the lack of true RPGs out there, making a good one myself might be fun. Anyplace I could find a tutorial or books would be appreciated.

Right now I know pretty much only C/C++, so if it requires another language, giving me a little direction on where to go for new things would be appreciated as well, ty.

If you have never used graphics before then I suggest doing a 2D game before trying anything else. While there are several game engines out there (Crystal Space, Torque, etc.) it is often nice to know how it all works before you try using one yourself.

As always, you should probably get a book or two. Try picking up a book on OpenGL or DirectX, as chances are you will be using one of them for a 3D game.

If you are bent on skipping some things, you could invest in Torque or download some other game engine. They take care of a lot of things, but you have to know how they work. So it would probably put you in the same boat anyway.

When looking for good books on programming (or more specifically, game programming), head on over to www.gamedev.net and check out their books section.

Should give you a good listing of graphic programming books.
