port troubles

Perhaps there is already a copy running? Try doing "ps" to see if this is the case.

I don't think there is another copy running.

I'm working on an XP Home system, with a firewall behind a router which also has a firewall, but I doubt that's what causing my troubles.

and ps?

Check your administrative privileges on XP, and also possibly check if you have a program like ZoneAlarm installed which can stop your PC from acting as a server.
