Hey,

I'm running 14 worlds at once inside MUSHClient. They are all in constant use and all access 1 .db file that is about 2MB in size. So there's alot going on, on that PC.

The PC specs are:

300mhz Intel
256mb SDRAM
40gb (new, fast) HDD
Rubbish AGP Card
Windows 98SE

It's generally OK, but I just wanted to know if there is anything I should do to speed it up. Having windows XP or 2000 tends to make the PC as slow as anything after 12 hours without reboot.

Do you have any suggestions on how to keep it running smooth? What about making the .db access faster?

Your best performance improvements will *always* be in RAM and CPU quality. 256mb of sdram in a 98SE machine should be plenty but the 300mhz cpu is killing your speed right now unless the motherboard bus is slower. Database access is just slow, nothin to be done for it unfortunately :( As far as making it run smoother, with that many worlds going at once on those specs, 8-12 hours is about as much runtime as yer gonna get without rebooting. Upgrading the RAM might help a little but you'll need to upgrade the CPU (and probably motherboard) to get any real noticable improvements with that many worlds.

If it gets slow "after 12 hours" then it seems likely it is consuming RAM.

Memory is cheap these days, I would try upgrading my RAM by another 256 or 512 Mb, however if that is not practical try reducing the amount of memory used by each world. For instance, if you have set the buffer size for each world to 10,000 lines make it 5,000.

A faster CPU would probably help too, however if the RAM has filled up and it starts swapping memory to disk often, you are probably being limited by disk access speed, not CPU. A faster disk might help there, but the primary thing would be to increase RAM or reduce MUSHclient's usage of it.
