Mush Chat

Hello again.

I'm trying to work with the Mush chat system, and I've noticed that some people are able to be called, and others just can't be. I assume this has something to do with router and/or firewall settings? Someone mentioned something to me about how the Mush chat system was outdated/impractical with the way networks work now, can't recall specifically what though.

Anyway, basically just looking for what all I would need to check or do in order to allow people to call me with the Mush chat plugin, or for any insights anyone might have.

There is nothing specifically outdated or impractical about the MUSHclient chat system however you do need to make sure that your router settings allow incoming connections.

In particular if you are using the default port of 4050 and you are trying to accept incoming calls then you probably need to activate port forwarding on your router. Port forwarding tells the router to send incoming calls to a particular PC on your home network.

If the symptoms are that you can connect to other people but they cannot make an incoming call your PC then almost certainly port forwarding is what needs to be set up.

If you use your MUSHclient file menu -> Windows Socket Information, you can find out your local IP address. This will probably be something starting with 10.0.x.x, 172.16.x.x or 192.168.x.x

Once you have established your local IP address you can configure your router to redirect calls incoming on port 4050 to that PC. Then you should be able to accept incoming chat calls.

If you are unable to call some people then they may also need to configure their own router to set up port forwarding as well. You can minimise the number of people that need to do that, to an extent, by deciding on one person to act as the host. That is, the PC that accepts incoming calls, and then everyone else only has to make an outgoing call. Of course the host PC needs to be turned on for that to work.
