Having Trouble Connecting to my favorite MUD

So, I have a favorite MUD that I play on, and I've pretty much used MUSHclient for the last three or so years to play on that MUD. Now, when I use a cable modem to hook up to it, I've had no problems with connection. Recently, though, I've had to move back home, and at home, they have a DSL modem. Now, the connection works for everything else, IM, Internet, ect., but when I try to connect to my favorite MUD using MUSHclient, or any other client for that mater, I get the following error message:

Unable to connect to "Wor", code = 10060 (Connection timed out)

I've read the connection FAQ on these forums, followed them and did everything correctly. And yes, this is a private residence, I'm not trying to connect to my MUD at school or work or anything.

People, suggestions are very welcome.

So telnet cannot connect either? What is the address/port for this MUD?

buffymud.wolfpaw.net:5000

My personal opinion is there's a firewall somewhere blocking me, not on my computer, mind you. Maybe the modem itself. I don't know, honestly. I'd try tunneling, using a program like HTTP-Tunnel...if I understood it a little better.

And I tried telnet...at least I think I did. I tried connecting using PuTTy, but it seemed to have the same problem.

I've also tried to reset my connection. That didn't work.

I know the MUD is up.

  • Is this the exact same PC you use elsewhere, that works? If not (eg. you are using your parents' PC) then maybe the Windows or other firewall is blocking unknown programs, maybe silently.
  • If it is your usual PC, try loading MUSHclient onto a different one and seeing if that works (or just use telnet).
  • Try connecting to a different MUD (preferably with a different port number). Maybe the ISP they use blocks port 5000. Maybe they block that IP address for some reason.
  • Try emailing their ISP, and ask if there is some reason you can't connect to a text-based MUD game on that address/port. Maybe the ISP only allows web browsing but not game playing. Maybe.
  • Try looking at the FAQ on their ISP's web site. It might mention allowed/disallowed things.
  • The DSL modem is probably also a router. See if you can connect to that with the admin password, and check out if it is set up to block/allow certain things. Most router's have an administration web page on the first address in the range they are using (in my case it is 10.0.0.1, but it might be something like 192.168.0.1 or 172.16.0.1).

Possibly the router could be accessed with username "admin" and password "password".

Yes, this is the same computer I always play the MUD with, a laptop.

* If it is your usual PC, try loading MUSHclient onto a different one and seeing if that works (or just use telnet).

Using the same connection, I did that. It still won't open the MUD using MUSHclient or any other client.

* Try connecting to a different MUD (preferably with a different port number). Maybe the ISP they use blocks port 5000. Maybe they block that IP address for some reason.

I was able to connect to another MUD by using telenet.

Considering I've already checked that other MUDs work, It's quickly becoming my opinion that port 5000 and port 5001 are blocked by this ISP or router for whatever reason.

* Try looking at the FAQ on their ISP's web site. It might mention allowed/disallowed things.

Will check on this soon.

Can you access that MUD's website?

Can you access other MUDs on port 5000?
