Turn-based combat in a MUD?

Hello!

I'm a great fan of different kinds of RPGs and have especially enjoyed many console RPGs such as Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star. I have also played a few online RPGs, one to mention is Fairyland, but unfortunately it turned P2P and I'm a just a poor student :)

One thing in common in all these great games was the highly strategical, _turnbased_ combat, which allowed player to get involved in the combat much more intensively than in the basic clickclickclicktillyourfingerbleeds. Now I just LOVE the whole idea of MUDs, but I've been having a very hard time trying to actually find a MUD that fits my needs and one thing I absolutely can't stand is the realtime"combat" (which in many MUDs is the basic "kill monster" and wait till it's dead... now where's the strategy?)

So where are all the MUDs with the turnbased combat from the good old console times? Having been asking this question I've got some odd replies on how it wouldn't work.?! And I'm asking myself, why? It works in many graphical online-RPGs and referring back to Fairyland, it worked absolutely marvelously! So why wouldn't it work in a MUD? The idea is the same minus graphics :)

So, to all fellow mudders, a question: Are there even any MUDs out there with a combat system like this?

And to developers: Make your MUD stand out from the grey mass, make combat turnbased :)

There is plenty strategy in that, such as if you will heal yourself while fighting, attack, defend, and so on. Skills, styles, there is a lot.

There are tons of MUDs with turn based combat out there. Use mudconnector.com to find some. I can't think of any offhand.

I wouldn't call it strategy if you heal yourself occasionaly to prevent dying :) Or if you keep typing "cast <some superspell here>".

Tons? Give me a break, I've tried searching with "turn based" and "turnbased", only found one and that was some star wars mud. (Found others aswell but they had the whole game turnbased and weren't exactly MUDs at all)

I was providing one example.

Just because they don't appear in the search doesn't mean none exist.

Let's say you play a mud who have fireweapons and spells, and swords and lightsabers. Also skills like flurry, bash, disappear, bodyslam... and so on.
Is not wise to spam "flurry dragon" 20 times... More than that, the dragon not seems to be bothered of your scratches. Maybe have someone else to "curse dragon" and maybe "sleeper dragon" then you can change your sword with a dagger and can "backstab dragon". Another member of party can "shoot dragon"... or if you are fortunate enough to have 2 tanks they can make the dragon to change attack from one to another while you are nuking.
There are strategies. Just because you was unable to figure out them does not means they are missing.

Another example. Let's say you have hypnosis skill and you are PvP. The classic would be "hypno X sleep" to make the opponent sleep and you can backstab him. Well... a better tactic is to "hypno x rem all" | "hypno x drop all". while x is "get all" and "wear all" you can place a lot of hits. Even better "hypno x quit" if the mud holds the quiting char for a time as "linkdead". In the time x needs to reconnect, type password and all this stuff.... he's dead.

Were just 2 examples. Did not mean to offend. Just use what you have to get max advantage.
