this happens on a computer with windowsXP and normal user *and* from hard drive.
this does not happen when running mushclient from usb stick. unfortunately, i forgot my usb stick today, so i need to dig deeper to this problem now...
where to start?

A quick search turned up this.
ah sorry!
v 4.40
i tried 4.43, and it gave me more detailed info, like i probably have no writing permission to dir, which is the point of all this mess.
solution (quick&dirty) : borrowed usb stick, copied installation there, playing from there, no problem.
this is unsatisfactory, but it is my problem, and i have to fix it later byt getting more priviledges from the compSupportDude, whom i am actually helping now (by playing muds)... :D
-thanks-
Make a shortcut to Mushclient.exe
Change the Start In directory in the shortcut to a directory you have write access to.
A normal user doesn't have write permissions to either C:\Documents and settings\all users... or C:\program files
