Being that these are text based non profit games has anyone ever had any issues with copyright violation? For instance, if i use a recognizable quote from a console game or a spell or skill from a popular tabletop roleplaying game, there shouldnt be any big deal correct? It seems to me if it caused problems then 80% of the muds out there would be mutilating the copyrights of 2nd Ed. AD&D.

There are some things you can copyright and others you can't. For instance, you can't copyright game design. Without going into a big discussion of what can and can't be, though, in general being a non-profit game won't necessarily protect you if "they" (whoever "they" are in this case) find you. Of course, it makes it very hard for "them" to find you much less notice or care about you, and it also means you're not making money off of their stuff, but if they choose to enforce it it's their right to do so.

Star Wars MUDs are in bigger trouble, for instance, if they use major characters or names -- like, well, "Star Wars" itself. :-)
