This is by design. The "no echo commands" is set by IAC WONT ECHO from the MUD. This is for entering passwords, for instance.

The whole idea of not echoing is so that someone looking over your shoulder doesn't see the password. It is defeated somewhat if the "auto repeat" immediately pops the password into view after you send it.

Similarly, it is defeated if you can just hit "auto repeat" and find out what it is.
